Background of the Study

Healthy aging is a critical component of public health as populations around the world, including in Nigeria, age rapidly. In Kebbi State, the elderly population faces numerous challenges, including limited access to healthcare services, social isolation, and inadequate nutrition (Umar et al., 2024). Nurses play a pivotal role in promoting healthy aging by providing education on disease prevention, offering support for chronic conditions, and promoting physical and mental well-being among older adults.

Despite the increasing importance of healthy aging, there is limited research on the role of nurses in promoting healthy aging in Kebbi State. Nurses can play an integral role by helping elderly individuals manage chronic diseases, encouraging physical activity, and offering mental health support. This study aims to explore the role of nurses in promoting healthy aging in Kebbi State, with a focus on their involvement in care and education for older adults.

Statement of the Problem

Although nurses are key players in promoting healthy aging, their roles in Kebbi State have not been adequately explored. There is limited information on how nurses educate and support older adults to achieve and maintain good health in the face of aging-related challenges. This study seeks to investigate the role of nurses in supporting healthy aging and to identify strategies for improving their involvement in elderly care in Kebbi State.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To explore the role of nurses in promoting healthy aging among older adults in Kebbi State.
  2. To assess the health education and support services provided by nurses to elderly individuals in Kebbi State.
  3. To recommend strategies for enhancing nurses’ role in promoting healthy aging in Kebbi State.

Research Questions

  1. What role do nurses play in promoting healthy aging in Kebbi State?
  2. What health education and support services do nurses provide to elderly individuals in Kebbi State?
  3. How can nurses’ involvement in promoting healthy aging be enhanced in Kebbi State?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Nurses in Kebbi State play an active role in promoting healthy aging among older adults.
  2. Health education and support provided by nurses significantly contribute to the well-being of elderly individuals in Kebbi State.
  3. Strategies to enhance nurses’ involvement in promoting healthy aging will improve the quality of life for elderly individuals in Kebbi State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on nurses working in healthcare facilities in Kebbi State and their interactions with older adult populations. Data will be collected through surveys, interviews, and health assessments. Limitations include potential biases in self-reporting and challenges in accessing remote areas.
